The ten most played PC games

Listed below (in order) are the most popular PC games in the world right now, in terms of player hours. I think of myself as a pretty dedicated game player, mostly on PC, yet I've only played one of them.

I played COD:MW1, and half of 2 before I got bored. Never made it to 3.

Minecraft is on my list ofgames to play when I have a free six months.

I liked MW1 (and for that matter COD2, which was one of the WW2 games), and will get around to MW2 and 3 someday.

Even though only one person so far has played Minecraft, everyone so far has heard of it. I wonder what it is doing to raise awareness that some of the bigger budget games listed aren't.

Minecraft is still insanely popular and addictive. Apparently selling about 10,000 copies a day.

And it's achieved mass appeal, because anyone can do stuff in it. Like Lego.

A friend of mine posted this last week: http://cairmen.livejournal.com/438839.html - The Zero Punctuation review gets across the appeal quite well, I think.

Wow - played none of them yet I'm an obsessive gamer. Of course I guess that's like being an obsessive music fan and owning no singles in the current chart.

Interesting that two of them are Blizzard games and two of them are clones of DOTA, a spinoff of a Blizzard game.

Blizzard certainly have the magic touch.

I have played Battlefield 3 and COD:MW3... however on consoles, so I've put them down as No when I did the poll, which seems fair.

I did play World of Warcraft once, and woke up 6 months later wondering where all the time had got to, why my girlfriend was screaming at me, and why I hadn't played any other games in so long. So it had to go.

I'm actually surprised there aren't more casual/social games on the list... I would think the number of people who play eg Bejewelled/Farmville/Plants vs Zombies/Bookworm/Words with Friends/Chess/Backgammon on PC would be very high.

Although I only played Minecraft extremely briefly on a free online hosted thingy before they shut those down, and I've only played Diabolo III and Starcraft II briefly on someone else's computer. I didn't really get into Maple Story either, although I spent a little while squishing slimes.

And I finally let my Warcrack subscription lapse some time ago - there are plenty of f2p MMOs which are just as good to me, and don't make me feel like I 'ought' to be playing them to get my money's worth.

ditto. I bought LOTRO when they had an offer on, lifetime sub for less than a year's paid sub. I usually play two evenings a week, but don't feel i have to play it every day to get my money's worth, like i did with WoW. That ended up (for me) just like an expensive glorified talker.

on this being a specific list from Xfire users - Steam's top ten is quite different.

It seems the the only computer game I ever play to any great extent is Civ, in its many forms, which I have been doing since I had the original on a Mac LCIII.

submitted answers, but I'm not the best person to ask as I don'r really play any PC games... unless you count spider solitaire, mah jong titans or minesweeper. Given how many hours of my life that something as simple as solitair can eat, I really don't want to get into more complex or demanding games! :-)

I tend to play MMOs, like Dark Ages of Camelot, Everquest, Everquest II, World of Warcraft, LOTRO, Rift, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Guild War 2 etc. Currently my pc game time is invested in EVE.

Oh and then there are things like Civ V, which is a time sink if there ever was one...

Strictly speaking, I can't be sure I've heard of the specific numbered variant for each of my straight 'no' votes, but I didn't vote 'never heard of it' if I was familiar with the family name. I'm not sure about Heroes of Newerth either, it does sound familiar but possibly only because it is somehow generic- (or, more kindly, archetypal-)sounding. (Also, a classic Thomas Covenant type name :-)) Given I've never played any of that sort of game (and indeed precious few others) I'm slightly surprised so many of the names were familiar, but it's probably a kind of osmosis from having some serious gamers on my flist. For similar reasons, I'm familiar with the names of many, many anime that I've never watched.

Also, I was gently amused by:
Have you ever played Battlefield 3?
philmophlegm -- Yes
bunn -- Never heard of it

(I think having individual interests is entirely healthy, of course.)
