1. Spent some of the HMV gift vouchers I received in return for frequent stayer points at a certain mediocre hotel chain on the album ‘The Varangian Way’ by Finnish folk metal band Turisas. For the uninitiated, this is a concept album about the Norse trade routes from the Baltic to Constantinople, but which also features a cover of Boney M’s ‘Rasputin’. The latter fits better into the metal genre than the original disco.

2. Joined the facebook group ‘1 MILLION STRONG 4 IRON MAIDEN to open the 2012 London Olympic Games!!’ Believe it or not, I heard about this on Radio 2* yesterday afternoon on my way home from Watford. This is no doubt only partly serious, but I honestly think Iron Maiden would be highly appropriate. Genuinely British (if not Londonian) musical genre, internationally famous and just well…good. In the end it’ll probably be someone like Elton John, Leona Lewis or Simply Red singing something written by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd-Webber. Or they’ll realise that London isn’t remotely British anyway, and we’ll get some foreign band. In which case, I know a Finnish band that would be great…

* Yet another sign of getting old, although in my defence I haven’t had my new in-car entertainment system fitted yet, so I’m stuck without iPod compatibility and only a radio / six CD combination to keep me company.

I remember listening to that album a few years ago with Bunn, Chainmailmaiden and Pellinor, when everyone else was busy playing TrackMania or various console games. Toffee was made with rosemary, far too much wine was consumed, and at one point everyone squeezed into the utility room to let a nervous cat pass through the kitchen. By about the fourth loud rendition of that Rasputin song - and the fourth glass of wine - it seemed like the most inspired and amazing song in existence.

There's also a campaign to get Morris dancing in the opening ceremony. Does Morris dancing go with Iron Maiden, I wonder...?

\m/ Yay, Turisas! \m/

I love that album, as LoA remembers :-D

Cursed Be Iron and the Miklagard Overture are my favorites, along with Rasputin of course - that's what made me buy the album.

I don't usually like that roaring kind of metal singing, but I think (the rather yummy Warlord Nygard) uses just the right amount :-) Battle Metal off the album of the same name is also a great song. I like to listen to it when I'm on the cross trainer at the gym, it makes me imagine I'm striding into battle :-D
