AKICOLJ

Wellinghall has a tag for his posts of 'AKICOLJ'. (Actually, for all I know, this might be something that many people have, but I've noticed it mostly on his journal. It apparently stands for 'All Knowledge Is Contained On Live Journal'.

Now wellinghall uses it mostly for fairly mundane questions like how he should ensure a good night's sleep or places of interest near the Forest of Dean. It occurs to me though that I know some pretty clever people on LiveJournal, people whose knowledge and education is in very different fields to my own*. Surely a good use for LiveJournal would be to ask my friends to educate me on stuff that is outside of my own specialist areas.

Anyway, with that in mind, I intend to have my own AKICOLJ tag, and I will use it to ask harder questions that I want your help with.

* For the record, I'll have a stab at answering any questions anyone may have about accountancy, economics, British politics since 1945, international politics since 1945 and the late Roman Republic.

And now I know, it will bug me... I thought that things were contained *in* other things.

I think things could be contained on or in... Icecream is clearly contained in a container, but, if I had a herd of rampaging bullocks on a plateau, I think I could ask a cowboy to keep them contained on there, or even, up there... ?

True, but I think he's right about "in a journal" rather than "on a journal".

I blame illiterate actuaries...

I'd been reading it, rightly or wrongly, as 'collected' rather than 'contained'; I'm not sure whether this reading is much better, but I think I prefer it.
