The Dam Busters name change was inevitable, and it's not as if the film was a documentary (in which case I would object very strongly.) It's going to be difficult enough to get the Yanks to go in the first place...

I'm just wondering how many people will complain and whinge that Yanks have been added to the aircrew in the films to get folk in America to see the film!

Oh I didn't notice that! That's far, far worse.

It's a long time since I read Brickhill's book (like over 40 years) but I think at least one pilot in the Squadron was American (or possibly Canadian.)

617 pilots were a mix of British, Commonwealth, and Yanks. I just decided not to say it earlier to see who bit ;-)

I'm confused. Are you saying that the film has incorrectly added American aircrew to appeal to American movie audiences or not?

Brickhill notes that Joe McCarthy was from Brooklynn and joined the RAF before the US joined the war, he also notes that 'Dinghy' Young was bred in California but doesn't say what his nationality was.

So in reality there were yanks in the Dambusters (or at least one), but I suspect that someone will at some point froth about it because they don't know better.

Apparently the newspapers are already frothing in pure speculation.

To be fair, Hollywood does have form on that score...

I did wonder - but, as I said, it is a very long time since I read Brickhill. (Though I do still own and refuse to junk the RAF anniversary T-shirt with a Vulcan in 617 livery.)
