England's wicket-keeper Matt Prior has a test match batting average of 44.4 in seventy-odd innings. Can anyone think of a better test batsman who has generally come in no higher than 7 in the batting order?

I can't think of a test batsman of any calibre!

Billy Gunn?
George Gunn?

Checking wikipedia (which will have to do without a Wisden's to hand), reveals that Billy isn't close, but George averaged 40 over 15 tests in the first part of the 20th century, so he's comparable, albeit in less than half the innings. Did he definitely come in that far down the order though?

Ah, these were chiefly a response to pellegrina's comment about batsmen of any calibre ... ;-)
